The given bar chart depicts a comparison of illiteracy rates referring to gender between six aggregated geographical areas in 2000.
Overall, the proportions of uneducated men and women in developed countries were much lower than in other compared regions. Additionally, the share of illiterate people among females were generally significantly higher than among males in all estimated areas.
The most obvious thing is that the highest rates of uneducated people were revealed mainly in developing countries. While the number of illiterate men there was close to estimated 30%, the utmost rates of untaught females were recorded in South Asia, Arab States and Sub-Saharan Africa with about 55%, 52% and 48% respectively.
On the contrary, the rates of illiteracy in East Asia & Oceania and Latin America & Caribbean were noticeably lower. Although there was a slight difference between uneducated men and women in Latin America/Caribbean, roughly 10% and 12% each, the number of illiterate females in East Asia/Oceania amounted to 20%, which was almost twice as high as the statistics for males. Eventually, the lowest number of unschooled people of both genders was in developed countries, where it was registered to be just over 2 % in women and 1% in men.
