Contained in the bar chart provided is data pertaining to the proportion of households that owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 and 2011. Overall, there was an upward trend in households owning accommodation, whereas the trend for households renting accommodation was downward.
Regarding the proportion of households that owned their accommodation, one sees a pattern of increase. It is clear that households in owned accommodation rose steadily from just over 20% in 1918 to nearly 70% in 1991. However, after reaching peak at approximately 70% in 2001, the figure for households in owned accommodation witnessed a slight drop to about 64% as the period ended.
Turning to the percentage of households renting accommodation, the trend in evidence was one of decrease. In spite of starting at around 78% in 1918, the figure experienced a considerable reduction to a bottom of about 31% in 2001. In the next decade, the household renting accommodation grew minimally by 5% to 36% by the end of the period.
Finally, a noticeable event that took place in 1971 was the intersection of the two given figures at exactly 50%.
