The bar chart illustrates the changes in the proportion of families categorized by whether they owned a house or rented it in England and Wales from 1918 and 2011.
Overall, there was an upward trend in households to have their own accomodation, whereas the other plummeted remarkably in less than a century. In addition, the highest proportion of households in owned accommodation was recorded at the end of the survey, while that of families living in rented housing was at the beginning year.
Regarding the pattern of people staying in their own houses, starting at the humble figure at 23% in 1918, the percentage rose slightly to 50% in 1971. Growth in the next year was incredibly fast when reaching the peak at relatively 69%, which was 3 times higher than the original point, in 2001. In the next decade, the percentage of those living in owned houses decreased minimally to 63% at the end of the survey.
As opposed to the proportion of households having to rent a house, 90% was the percentage of them in 1918. After that, the figure roughly halved to 50%, equal with the figure of the former in the same years, before hitting the bottom of 31% in 2001. An insignificant rise in its percentage can be seen in 2011.
