The chart compares the figures for the proportions of residents who owned and rented accommodation in the UK and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, during the period, there were more families preferred purchasing accommodation while the opposite was true for accommodation being rented. Also, in the middle year of the period, two types of accommodation were equally popular with households.
In 1918, the percentage of families owning houses was around 20% in comparison with nearly 80% people renting accommodation. In the following years, the proportion of residents buying houses gradually increased to 50% in 1971. In contrast, the figure for households with rented accommodation remarkably dropped by almost 30% at the same time.
From the year 1971 to 2000, the number of households renting houses continued to sharply decrease, accounting for 30% of total households. Meanwhile, the figure for families purchasing accommodation had the opposite trend and reached a peak at nearly 70% in 2000. At the end of the period, there were a marginal increase in the proportion of households with rented houses and also a slight decline in the percentage of families with owned accommodation, which were over 35% and under 65% respectively.
