The chart shows the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops opening in a country from 2011 to 2018.
The line graph illustrates the number of shops that stopped their business compared to the newly-opened ones in a particular country from 2011 to 2018.
Overall, both closures and openings decreased in number, whereas there were significant fluctuations regarding shop shutdowns.
First, the proportion of shop openings was notably high at the beginning of the period, with nearly 8500 shops emerging in 2011, compared to approximately 6300 of closures in the same year. However, while shop shutdowns dropped slightly in the following year, the number of shops being introduced experienced a steep decline to nearly 4000. After that, the figures of both sectors witnessed insignificant changes during the next two years, until 2014 when the two numbers merely met at 6300. Moreover, there was a dramatic decrease in shop shutdowns in 2015, with a hard fall from 6500 to beneath 1000. Subsequently, the figure rose sharply afterward before undergoing a stable phase in the last two years. Shop openings had a similar trend with a decline from 6000 to 4000 in 2015, while this number remained steady prior to a trivial decrease of 1000 in the final year.
