The chart shows the percentage of male and female teachers in six different types of educational setting in the UK in 2010.
The bar chart represents the gender distribution among teachers working at six different levels of the UK’s education system in 2010. Overall, while female teachers dominate pre-school and primary school, in higher education institutions such as private training institutes or universities, men make up the higher percentage of the teaching staff.
Going into further details, the gender distribution in pre-school and primary school teachers had the least balance, with nine out of ten teachers at these levels being female. For secondary schools, although women still make up the majority of the teaching faculty, the proportion of men were considerably higher than at the pre-school and primary school levels, at around 45%, compared to figures of less than 10% at the other two levels.
In colleges, the number of male instructors and the number of female instructors were approximately equal, whereas at private training institutes, men contributed to around 55% of the teaching staff. Finally, at 70%, the fraction of male instructors at universities was the highest among the six surveyed institutions.
