The following chart illustrates how many million people visited UK and how many UK residents travelled abroad during 1979 to 1999, with the bar chart depicting what countries were more interested in by UK dwellers to visit in 1999.
As can be clearly observed from the first chart, there were a significant increase in both travelling to and from UK. Around 10 million individuals made a visit to UK from foreign countries in 1979. While it experienced a slight rise till 1986, the number of visitors went up dramatically to near 30 million in 1999. On the other hand, approximately 12 million of UK residents visited abroad in 1979. Whereas there was a gradual climb to around 20 million by 1984, from 1985 onward, it skyrocketed to more than 50 million in 1999.
Turning to the second chart, five distinctive countries were considered as the popular destinations by UK dwellers in 1999. More than 10 million people who were resident in UK had an experience of visiting France, although it was a bit more than Spain visitors (about 20 million). Followed by USA with less than 5 million, then Greece and Turkey, by about 4 and 3 million, respectively.
Overall, it is clear from the charts that unlike the fact that the number of input and output tourists of UK rose significantly during 2 decades of 1979 till 1999, UK residents who travelled abroad always outstripped travelers who visited UK. Meanwhile, nearer countries of France and Spain were among the most popular regions than other European nations or America.
