The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time doing housework and households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graphs illustrate the proportion of households consuming 3 different kinds of electrical appliances and the average number of time families in a nation spent on doing household chores in the same period of time, from 1920 to 2019.
It’s clear that the washing machine had become less popular than the refrigerator and the vacuum cleaner before the end of that period of time. The latter percentage of those three appliances was higher than the former. And people particularly spent less time each year on doing housework in a week over a period of a century.
Looking at the percentage of households with electrical equipment, in 1920 the washing machine accounted for 40%, nearly a third of households owning the vacuum cleaner, while approximately none of them had the refrigerator. However, a significant upward trend had been witnessed in the proportion of the refrigerator, specifically 90% in 1960. The figure for vacuum cleaners increased gradually and reached the same percentage as the refrigerator did, in 2000. In contrast, the washing machine had a periodic fluctuation and stood at nearly 70%. In the last 20 years, all households in this country had refrigerators and vacuum cleaners.
According to the second graph, in 1920, each family spent an average of around 50 hours per week on housework. And there was a near fivefold decrease in the number of time people spent on household chores over the following century. By the hundredth year of this period, the average weekly amount of time had fallen to just over 10 hours.
