The picture illustrates the process of water cycle in which water from the surface of Earth travels to the air and back again to the land.
Overall, there are three main stages in the water cycle including the evaporation of water, precipitation, and eventually water running back to the ocean.
Beginning with the evaporation of water, approximately 80% of water vapour in the air comes from the ocean. Under the function of heat from the sun, the water vapour is condensed in order to form clouds. In the next stage, the cloud formations are precipitated and fall into the surface of the Earth as a form of rain or snow.
In the third stage, rainwater on the surface of the earth undergoes various paths to go to the ocean. Some water fall into lakes or return to the ocean via ‘surface runoff’. Otherwise, rainwater may filter through the ground, reaching the impervious layer of the Earth and then pouring to the ocean. However, the process of salt water intrusion takes place before the water enters the ocean to re-initiate the cycle.
