The diagrams below show the life cycle of a species of large fish called the salmon.

The diagrams give information about three major life stages of salmon, from different perspectives such as reproduction, growing to maturity and migration. In general, salmon could grow form eggs to as large as 70 to 76 centimeters and live in at least three different type of water environments.

The life cycle of a salmon starts with tiny salmon eggs laid by mature fish in slow moving upper river, covered with reeds as well as small stones in case of potential predators. Normally it would take five to six months for baby salmon referred as ‘fry’ to born. Flowing with fast water into lower river, baby salmons would spent approximately 4 years in the lower river until they turn into teenager salmon ‘smolt’ which length to twelve to fifteen centimeters. Naturally, smolt then migrated to the open sea to enjoy a more abundant food source and grow to maturity as adult salmon, the size of which is about 70 to 76 centimeters, this stage usually takes around 5 years.

After salmon turn to maturity, they would however return to their birthplace, the upper river to lay eggs for reproduction, and the new life cycle of salmon begins again.
