The line chart gives information about three demographic trends in Scotland: birth rate, population growth rate and death rate over the course of 80 years starting from 1940.
Overall, both three rates saw a significant drop in comparison with the beginning. Interestingly, the population growth rate reached 0% in the 2000s.
In 1940, the birth rate was the highest, with nearly 2,5%, followed by the death rate and population growth rate, with nearly 1,5% and about 0,8% respectively.
From 1940 to 1955, the population growth rate experienced a sharp increase to around 1,5% in 1955. Meanwhile, the rate of birth dropped gradually to about 1,5% in 1955 and the rate of death decreased dramatically by over 1%. From 1955 to 2020, two of three trends saw a noticeable fall when the population growth rate dropped from 1,5% in 1955 to 0% since the 2000s and the rate of birth fell to 0,3% in 2020. Surprisingly, the death rate experienced a steady rise, from under 0,5% in 1955 to nearly 1% in 2020.
