The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.
"Recently, butter has been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States.
This change, however, has had little impact on our customers. In fact, only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating
that an average of 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers
who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers do not distinguish butter from
margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine."
In the memorandum from Happy Pancake House restaurant's business manager stated that customers are not able to differentiate butter from
margaine or customers use the word 'butter' to refer either butter or margarine . The manager as came to this conclusion based on the
report of the severs of thier restaurant that customers are not complaining when they serve margarnine when they ask for butter as
well as on an average 98 out of 100 people are happy with the change of butter and replace of it with margarine in Happy Pancake House
reataurants. However, before this recommendation can be properly evaluated, three quetions must be answered.
First of all, does many customers have visited the restaurant? recently butter has replaced with margarine perhaps many customers's
opinion may not taken into evaluation of it ,and then on an average there is a chance of 40 out 100 may not happy with the decision took
by the manager and not only that people whoever visited it might not that keen about the butter flavour. If either of the these
scenarios has merit, then conclusion drawn in the original argument is significantly weakened.
Secondly, does the customers who visited the reataurants in the recent times like to complain or having an dispute with the manager?
The manager prematurely assume that every customer who visited are okay with complaining if they have any problem if the butter substitute
and whoever going to visit the restaurants in upcoming days also behave same as the way the previous customers. But if they really use the
butter and margarine in thier daily lives sure they gonna differntiate it and definately complain and the fame of the restaurant may come
down.If the above is true then the argument does not hold water.
Thirdly, the people who visited restaurant does not have much health consiousness? The manager also assuming that every one are not giving
that importance to thier health and they are ready to eat anything which taste good based on the few people who visited their Happy
Pancake House. But their might have people who know that margarine is not good to health as of butter and they may start complaining and
then it would be drawnthe argument to flawed.
In conclusion ,the argument,as it stands now,is considerably flawed due to its reliance on several unwarranted assumptions.Ifthe author
is able to answer the three questions above and offer more evidence(perhaps in the form of a systematic research study),then it will be
possible to fully evaluate the viability of the prososed recommendation that either customers use term butter to refer either butter or
margarine or they can not distinguish butter and margarnine.
