The graph below compares changes in the birth rates of China and the USA between 1920 and 2000. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The graph provided reveals the changes that took place in the Chinese and USA birth rates in the period from 1920 to 2000.

Overall, the birth rates of both countries fluctuated in a down-ward trend over the period of 80 years. Although, the two trends were similar in terms of a general decline, the birth rate of the USA was higher than that of China in most years of the period shown.

It can be seen from the graph that from 1920 to 1930, the US birth rate fluctuated, although it always remained above 10%. However, in the following decade, the birth rate in the USA fell sharply to under 5%, followed by a considerable increase to hit a high of 15% in 1950. Throughout the remainder of the period, the US birth rate undergone a steady decrease and ended the period down to bottom out at approximately 7% in 2000.

In 1920 the birth rate of China was slight lower than that of the US, at about 10% and 12% respectively. However, in 1950, the Chinese birth rate experienced a marked growth of about 15% to reach the highest point of the whole line graph, at roughly 20%. From the year 1955 onwards, like the trend of the US birth rate, the birth rate of China declined gradually to nearly 2.5% in 2000.
