The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about energy consumption in the USA since 1980, with projections until 2030.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant.
The graph illustrates the fuel consumption of the US since 1980 and the projected use in 2030 in a report in 2008.
Overall, the quadrillion units of petrol and oil were the largest in 1980 and will continue to rank first in 2030 with the biggest rise. Except for hydropower units that are projected to plateau in 2030, the consumption of other fuels will experience a rise. Throughout five decades, nuclear, solar and natural gas projected consumption will increase gradually, whereas the consumption of petrol and coal are forecasted to rise significantly.
In 1980, the consumption of petrol and oil were at the first place with 35 quadrillion units, surpassing that of coal by nearly half. The natural gas consumption ranked second with 20 units, four times more than that of the least consumed fuels such as nuclear, solar and hydropower (under 5%). From 1980 to 2008, nuclear power was the only fuel that experienced a gradual increase. While the consumption of coal, natural gas and petrol fluctuated, the two remaining fuels only showed a mild fluctuation.
From 2010 to 2025, the consumption of nuclear, wind, hydropower and natural gas is forecasted to remain static. However, the units of petrol and coal are expected to surge significantly. Until 2030, the consumption of petrol and oil is projected to reach a peak of approximately 50 quadrillion units and secure its first place. The consumption of coal will nearly surpass that of the previous second-ranked natural gas with a projected gap of 5. The remaining fuels that used to rank last are predicted to divide their rankings, with hydropower taking the last place.
