the graph below shows average carbon dioxide CO2 emissions per person in the united kingdom sweden italy and portugal between 1967 and 2007

The graph compares four different countries in terms of carbon dioxide emissions per capita over a 40-year timespan.
Overall, while the proportion of carbon footprints emitted in Portugal and Italy climbed markedly, the figure for emissions of individuals in the United Kingdom and Sweden dropped substantially.

A closer look at the graph reveals that the UK ranked the highest throughout the decades, but witnessed a modest decline. Carbon dioxide discharged into the atmosphere in 1967 was over 10 metric tonnes. After a decade, there was a gradual fall in the mean carbon footprints released, followed by a period of dropping until 2007, at roughly 9 metric tonnes. The median CO2 emissions per person in Sweden also had the same figure as the UK in 2007, about nearly 9 metric tonnes. The year 1977 experienced a slight change in the average CO2 generated, which went up to over 11 metric tonnes, then plunged to 5.5 metric tonnes in 2007.

Over these 40 years, the number of average emissions per capita between Portugal and Italy increased significantly. The figure for Italy had considerably jumped, starting from 4 metric tonnes in 1967 tonnes and doubling to 8 metric tonnes in four decades. From 1967 to 2007, the proportion of carbon footprints emission in Portugal rose drastically. In 1967, it was just over 1 metric tonne; however, the figure soared dramatically to 5,5 metric tonnes, similar to Sweden's.
