The graph below shows the average daily spend of three categories of international visitor to New Zealand from 1997 to 2017.

This graph illustrates the average daily expenditure of three foreign groups of visitors from 1997 to 2017 in New Zealand. It can be seen that all three categories had rapid changes and between 2000 and 2003 the expenditure on these tourists was at its greatest level. In general, business travelers spent most of the day while visiting friends or family members spent the least.

In 1997 visitors spent over $260 a day in New Zealand, whereas tourists spent around $190 and visiting family or friends spent more than $120. Over the next five years, travelers from all three categories grew significantly to about 30 dollars, 270 dollars, and 220 dollars. But between 2003 and 2005, tourist costs unexpectedly decreased again.

From 2005 to 2015, business travelers' and vacationers' daily expenses ranged by around $200, persons visiting family or friends spent approximately $60 to $80 less each day. By 2017, daily expenditure for tourists, business people, and visiting friends or family was over $250, $210, and $140, respectively.
