The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

This line graph illustrates the percentage of people aged 65 years and above from 1940 till date and predicted values till 2040 in Japan, Sweden and USA. Overall it is estimated that in 2040 Japan will have the highest number of people above 65 and USA will have the lowest.
Looking at Japan, in 1940 only 5 percent population was above 65 year age line which is the lowest number as compared to rest of countries. There was a slow decline in the numbers till 2000 after which the percentage kept on increasing. It is predicted that there will be a sharp rise in old aged people in Japan in 2040 where almost 27 % of the population will be above 65.
On the other hand, USA started off at 9 % in 1940 which was the highest percentage for that time. The figures kept on increasing until 1980 where it hit a plateau at 15%. It is predicted that there will be a rise in the population above 65 in 2020 to 23 % in 2040.
Sweden on the other sided shows a mixed pattern, the figures kept on fluctuating with an overall increase and is thought to go up to 25 % on 2040/.
