The graph illustrates how the population of elderly people (aged 65 years and over) encountered changes from 1940 and how it is predicted to change until 2040 in USA, Sweden, and Japan.
In the USA and Sweden as Western countries, they experienced similar elderly population trend. The number were ony just below 10% initially, rose by about 5% four decades later, and by 2040 they will be about 25%. However, the only difference between them is that while in the USA the population was stagnated from 1980 until 2010s, the population in Sweden increased instead at that period to approximately 20%.
In Japan, as an Asian country, the elderly population trend is completely different. From 1940, the number hovered at only 5% and below until 2000s; making this country as the one having the lowest number at that period compared to the formers. Surprisingly, at the middle of 2000s the number was steadily increasing and it is forecast that by 2030, the number will skyrocket to over 25% in 2040.
In summary, in between 1940 until 2010s, the USA and Sweden had the most aging population compared to Japan, however, it is predicted that Japan elerdly population will outmatch the USA and Sweden aging population 30 years later.
