The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.

The line graph illustrates and compares the elderly ratio of three nations in three different continents. Giving a demonstration in a period of a century, this graph is also features a short-term prediction.

Overall trends demonstrate an increasing rate over a century. Although Japan had the lowest proportion of elderly people, it will have the highest proportion among other specified nations.

In 1940, the people aged 65 and above formed below 10% of the total population in their own country. Ratios were about 9, 7 and 5% for USA, Sweden and Japan, respectively. The trends remained the same until 1996, where Sweden overtook USA and achieved the highest proportion of elderly people among the surveyed countries. From 1996 until now, Sweden had the highest fraction of the aged people. Until 2028, a steady trend will govern the proportion.

Based on the prediction, we expect to observe an abrupt increase in Japan’s proportion between 2028 and 2033, where its trends will overtake the USA’s in 2030 and Sweden’s in 2033. By 2040, more than a quarter of Japan’s and nearly 25% of Sweden’s society will be aged 65 and above.
