The graph illustrates the percentage of the elderly aged inhabitants from 1940 to 2040 in three different nations namely Japan, Sweden and USA.
At the beginning, Japan had the highest proportion of old people about 8%. By 1960, the population of old people reached exact 10% in Japan. It continued to increase and reached 15% by 1980. But after 1980, it started decreasing and is being assumed that it will increase again only after 2020, and will finish at around 23% in 2040. Sweden started off at around 7% of people aged 65 and over. It followed Japan till 1990,but after 1990, it overtook Japan and the population of aged people in Sweden in 2010 reached 20%. Afterwards, it saw various ups and downs and is assumed to finish at 25% of elderly people in 2040.
USA in the beginning had 5% of old population, but later it decreased and the proportion of aged people by 1980 was about mere 3%. After 1990, the old people population in USA increased very significantly and is being assumed to have the highest number of elderly people, about 27% in 2040.
Overall, all nations saw fluctuations but the old aged inhabitants of all the nation is being assumed to increase by 2040. By 2040, both Japan and USA are assumed to swap their positions and Sweden is assumed to retain its spot.
