The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph gives information about the percentage of the population aging 65 and above in the USA, Sweden and Japan from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, the aging population in of the 3 countries is predicted to increase in the next 20 years; however it is japan that projected the sharpest rise in the future from the lowest percentage in the past up to the present. Meanwhile, the number of people over 65 years old in the us and Sweden witnessed fluctuation over the period.
In details, beginning 1940, the number of elderly people in the us and Sweden stood at less than 10% which increased to 15% for America, a little less higher than Sweden at about 14% in 1980. 1980 to 2020, American people aging 65 and above slightly decreased and almost remained steady at less than 15% , then it will rise to less than one quarter from 2020 to 2040. In contrary, Sweden’s elderly population declined slightly from 1980 to mid-2000 before it rose to one fifth of the population. it will experience a decrease from 2020 but will also increase to one quarter in 2040.
On the other hand, Japan began at the bottom at around 5% of the retirement age population which continued to decline 20 years after and remained unchanged for almost 3 decades before it increased remarkably until the mid of 2020 and 2040. By 2040, it will reach the peak of over 25% of its elderly people.
