Overall, there is a dramatical fluctuation in the quantities of both goods over the period of 28 years. However, those figures experienced a general rise, which showed a pattern of moderate development in the UK.

In the 1974-1978 period, although the number of road, water and pipeline gradually climb, the line of rail saw a downward trend in comparison with that of the other three. Then, there is a substantial vary in the figure of both four goods between 1978 and 1998, which led by road with quantities in vicinity of 90 million tons.
In the last part of the period, there is a significant climb in the number of pipeline with by 65 million tons in 2002. Likewise, quantities of road reached to a peak of 98 million tons while rail and pipeline steadily went up with the figure at about 41 million tons and 23 million tons, respectively.
