The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Illustrated in the line graph are the quantities of UK commodities transported on 4 different transportation from 1974 to 2002. Overall, all figures followed an upward trend but to different degrees and road transportation system remained to be the most popular over the given period.

As it is observed, starting from about 40 million tonnes in consumption in 1974, commodities carried by water which were fairly equal to those of pipeline experienced an upsurge throughout the period of 1978 and 1982. However, the data of road and rail showed a sign of significant decrease. Following that, all 4 figures data remained stable for about 12 years before their fluctuations in some years later.

Since then, despite pipeline system's gradual increase, 3 remained features reached their bottoms and then altogether rose to their peaks at the end of the studied period. While the growth of commodities transported by pipeline went back the same level of approximately 40 million in the beginning, systems of road and rail showed escalated for more than 20 millions tonnes on demand.
