The line graph illustrates the information of exported and imported items by road, water, rail and pipeline in the UK from 1974 to 2000. In general, product transportation by four modes rose with some fluctuations over the period shown, but the number significantly higher by road throughout the period.
Now turning to the details, in 1974, United Kingdom transported exactly 70 million tones of exports and imports by road. Then, it increased slightly, then fell from 1978 to 1982, then, moved upward for the next 11 years. Thereafter, it got up dramatically with a drop in 1996 and reached its highest point at almost 100 million tones. Similar quantities of goods shipments were made by water and railway in the same period, whilst only 2 million by pipeline. After 1974, water and rail transit increased and decreased sharply. There was a sharp rise, followed by a gradual leap from 1978 to 1988; it leveled off at 60 million tones. It remained the same for over 3 years. Then, a brief dip, then, a rapid rise until 2002, when it peaked at nearly 62 million.
On the other hand, the amount by rail jumped with fluctuations and reached as it was in 1974. Pipeline transportation was noticeably lower compared to the other three transportation modes. But there was a slow improvement over the period.
