A quick glance at the graph reveals that the amount of people in thousands who were employed in the Australian mining industry was declined significantly over the research period, although there was a peak in the number of workers in 1950.
At the beginning of this century, there was more 60,000 people employed in this sector, but by the end of the first decade, this decreased enormously to only 40,000 people. The number of workers continued to fall gradually throughout from the 1920’s to the 1940’s by 10,000 people. There was a sudden surge in the fifth decade and reached a peak at about 50,000 people in 1950. From 1951 onwards, Australian mining industry employees started again a decline and was marked by the dramatic drop at the beginning of 1960s from 40,000 to around 20,000 people in 1970. By 1990, only 15,000 people were working in this sector in Australia.
