The graph illustrates the percentage of people who aged 65 or more in three countries from 1940 to 2040
Overall, it is clear that the proportion of the over 65s increased in all three countries over a 10 year period. However , japan is expected to experience the most dramatic change in its elderly population.
In 1940, people who aged 65 or over accounted for roughly 10% of population USA , compared to only about 7% of Sweden. Both countries followed a similar upward trend in the proportion of elderly people throughout the period shown. However , the percentage of the over 65s of Sweden overtook that of USA in near 2000 and is expected to continue to grow then reach its peak of over 25% . Predictions also reveal that the figure of USA will raise to about 23% in the final year
Despite being the country that had the lowest proportion of people who aged 65 and over in 1940 , Japan continued to show a decline in its elderly proportion throughout the period of 60 years. By contrast , the figure of Japan is predicted to grow significantly from 2000 and jump to about 28% , surpass both USA and Sweden in the final year.
