The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph illustrates the information about the percentage of the people aged 65 and above, over a hundred year period from 1940 to 2040 in different nations.
Overall, it can be seen that the proportion of the population of the given age in all three countries are set to rise significantly.
Looking at the details, the USA stood at around 9.5% in 1940, which was nearly two times higher than the Japan, at 5%. On the other hand, Sweden began at approximately 8%, a bit lower than the USA. While the USA and Sweden experienced upward trends from 1940 to 1980, Japan entirely witnessed an opposite direction from 1940 to 1960. However, roughly around 1999, Sweden overcame the USA, whereas Japan remained stable at 3% for about two decades (1960-1985). Subsequently, after 2000, in Sweden and Japan, there was a considerable growth in the figure, compared to the USA, where the percentage levelled off at just under 15% until 2020.
As regards the prediction, in the USA, the net percent of the aged people is likely to reach 25% in 2040, as opposed to Sweden to around 23% that will put Sweden in the last rank. In contrast, by the end of the period (2040) in Japan, the rate will have grown sharply to 27%, which means that the nation is predicted to top the list.
