The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The graph gives information about many changes in the percentage of elderly people, who are aged 65 or more, in the three countries namely japan, sweden, and the us, during past 80 years and projected proportion until 2040.
Overall, it indicates that in spit of some initial fluctuation, figure for all countries rose gradually and predictions show that this trend will continue with an intense slop, especially in japan.
In 1940, only 5% of japan’s population consisted of elderly people, while this figure for others were slightly higher and stood at about 7% for sweden and nearly 9% for the us. A gradual increase was seen in the us and sweden, with figures rising to roughly 15% in the late 90s. At this time, japan experienced a different path. The percentage of elderly people in this country dropped slightly for 2 decades, reached about 2.5% in 1960, maintained in this level for 20 years, before rising to 1940 figure in the early 2000.
The percentage of Americans aged more than 64, maintain fewer than 15% until 2020, while predictions show that in the last 20 years, an increase of 9% will occur in this country. Despite an increase of 5% then dropping of 2% until 2030 in terms of sweden old people, it is anticipated that this percentage rise constantly in the last decade, reaching 25% in 2040. A stable increase will be done in the proportion of Japanese who will be aged 65 or more, with projected figure rises to 10% in 2030, before experiencing an increase of up 20% in last decade.
