Money spent on food changed the most over the 30 year time period, decreasing by 30% from 1971 to 2001. In contrast to decreased expenditure on food, money spent on cars increased by 21% a substantial difference.The next biggest change was with regards to money spent on computers which increase by 10% over the three decades.In addition ,money spent on eating out at restaurants doubled from 7% to 14%.
Finally, banks decreased by 5% and furniture decreased very slightly by1% from 1971 to 2001.
In summary,expenditure in the United States over the three decade period differed between the various items with food and cars showing the greatest variance
