The first bar chart shows the number of marriages and divorces in the US from 1970 to 2000, and the second one compares the proportions of grown-up Americans during the same period depicted.
In general, the marital status shown in the first graph saw a gradual fall over years. However, the percentage of marriages was seen as higher than the other groups.
In 1970, approximately 2.5 million couples got married. This number remained by 1980, followed by a gradual fall until it was recorded at nearly 2 million married couples by 2000. The number of divorced couples was roughly 1 million by the beginning of the period, then it peaked at almost 1,5 million in 1980, before a decrease in the following years until it reached about 1 million by 2000.
In 1970, about 15% of mature Americans were unmarried, increasing to 20% by 2000. The group of married people in the US took the highest percentage, which was recorded at roughly 70% and 60% by the start and end of the period, respectively. Over the period, the widowed slightly fell from about 9% to 6%, while the divorced couples rose from almost 3% to 10%.
