The pie charts give the amount of electricity gotten from renewables and other sources in both Germany and France in the year 2009. Generally, conventional thermal generated more electricity in Germany than all other sources including renewables, while nuclear gave out the most electricity in France in. The renewables are wind, hydroelectric, solar biomass and geothermal. However, biomass generated more electricity as a renewable in Germany than the others, while hydroelectric generated more in France.
In Germany, conventional thermal was the source of choice in generating electricity with a proportion of 59.6%. Nuclear came second in its contribution to national electricity, providing 23.0% percent. In contrast, nuclear generated more electricity in France than all sources, edging conventional thermal by 65.7%. In both Germany and France, renewables where not significant sources of electricity, contributing 17.4% and 13.7% to the national electricity respectively.
Although renewables are made up five sources; hydroelectric, wind, biomass solar and geothermal, all but geothermal contributed to the generation of electricity in both countries. Solar generated the lowest electricity in both Germany and France with proportions of 6.1% and 0.9%. Biomass generated 39.3% of electricity in Germany, the most generated by any renewable. It was closely followed by wind that contributed 36.9%. Hydroelectric was a distant third in its generation of electricity in Germany, contributing 17.3%. Nonetheless, it generated the most electricity in France by a massive 80.5% . Wind contributed 10.5% while biomass ironically generated 8.1% of electricity.
