People have different views about the benefits of the ‘vertical’ city as opposed to a ‘horizontal’ city, while there are some clear advantages of the latter one, I believe that multistory buildings are usually more practical and realistic.
A ‘vertical’ city has two clear advantages. To begin with, it occupies less land, which means more land could be used by the government to build schools, hospitals, and parks, which directly facilitate citizens’ daily life. Secondly, it would be an optimal approach to housing issues for big cities especially those which are experiencing population surge. Multistory buildings can be designed up to 826 meters high and have more than a hundred floors, then they are able to accommodate thousands of people. In this way, these skyscrapers effectively meet the demand for accommodation of the ever-growing population and mitigate the pressure caused by the land shortage.
On the other hand, many people prefer a ‘horizontal’ city because it often gives them a broader field of vision, and allows them to get close to nature. When they stand on the rooftop, with fewer high-rise buildings hinder the view, they can see the sun rising from the horizon and the forest in the distance. By contrast, what people can experience from the ‘vertical’ city is enormous stress caused by the crowded office blocks. Another benefit of the city consisted of low-rise construction is that people can escape quickly from buildings when some emergencies occur. For example, it takes them a shorter time to run out of the building than those living in the upper-floor if an earthquake happens.
In conclusion, compared to the vertical city, the horizontal city requires more land, which is not realistic in most countries; We should consider more about the practicality of residential and official architectures since earthquake happens in a low frequency. All in all, I believe the vertical city is better.
