Some people say now there is less communication between family members than in the past. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Many people argue that the continuous technological breakthroughs in telecommunication and the Internet these days have not truly narrowed but widened the distance between people in a family. Personally, I completely agree with this view, and I believe the barrier between family members today, in most cases, lies in technological devices and stressful lifestyle.

The contemporary societies today are never short of phenomena that the whole family are bending their heads over either a laptop or a mobile phone to fully concentrate on video games, social networks, video clips, and so on available online while dining with their family or gathering with friends. Even for those who are not obsessed by these latest digital devices, sitting in a couch before TV screen slightly has become a common routine which has taken the place of a daily talk regarding what has occurred at work or school between spouses or parents and children these days. For these reasons, it goes without saying that the advent of various forms of digital entertainment does mark the beginning of new era in which people are indulged in the great joy and excitement provided by their own world rather than the constant interaction with family members.

Apart from digital devices, I also suppose that most citizens today take most of time to engage in their occupation or education. In other words, hardly can they squeeze too much spare time to stay with their family for a regular in – depth conversation during weekdays or a gathering at weekends or on holidays, because to finish the compulsory tasks in companies or everyday assignments given by tutors has already taken up most of their time and consumed most of their energy in such a fast-paced lifestyle. Texting messages or making a simple phone call for knowing children’s schedule, for instance, seems more practical compared to a genuine concern shown to their emotional changes.

In conclusion, except for those, especially the old, who still cling to a conventional lifestyle, which emphasize the kinship or bond within a house via constant interaction, the majority is influenced significantly by diverse external social elements and thus, shows a degree of changes in their habits or preferences in regard to how to manage and maintain family relationship. And in my opinion, it is high time that everyone should take this into a serious consideration for fear that the plague of indifference would root and sprout in family.
