The table illustrates how many miles an average British citizen traveled per year using different means of transport in 1985 and 2000.
Overall, what stands out from the table is that cars were by far the most popular mode of transportation in England, while taxis and bicycles were the least.
First of all, whereas in 1985 a person traveled approximately 4740 miles per year using all modes of travel, in 2000 this figure surged to 6475 miles. The main contributor to this increase was a car’s usage, as the distance traveled by this transport rose from 3199 miles to 4806 miles.
Turning to the other modes of travel, both in 1985 and in 2000 the next three most frequently used categories, apart from the “others”, were local buses, trains and walking, with 274, 366 and 237 miles in 2000 respectively. Taxis and bicycles were the least popular, with only 42 miles traveled in 2000 by the former and 41 miles by the latter.
