It was 22% in 2000 and is expected to grow to 31% by 2050. Asia, Oceania and North America had a similar population (11-12%) of over-60-year-olds in 2000. The population of this age group in all these three areas is predicted to double by 2050. Latin America had 7% population of 60+ age group, and this is forecast to grow approximately two and a half times and reach 18% by 2050. Africa had the least population of this age group in 2000, but this is also expected to grow more than two times and reach 12% by 2050. Overall, the figures suggest that population of 60 year olds will continue to grow in all regions but the growth will be more marked in the less developed regions.
