From the general perspective, it was observed that Tokyo has the highest number of passengers travelling through subterranean railway systems per year. London underground railway was the oldest of all the other cities established in 1863 and most recently was Los Angeles built in 2001.
London Underground railway was established in 1863 with approximately 400kms and carrying about 775 million passengers per annum. Though Paris which was opened in 1900, was about half of the kilometres than the London railway, it has 1000 million passengers more than London. Railway of Washington DC was launched in 1976 running about 126kms with 144 million passengers per year. Kyoto Underground railway was inaugurated in 1981, fetching around 11kms in its path and 45 million passengers travelling per year. Los Angeles subterranean railway as constructed in 2001, spreading out to 28kms of the route and 50 million passengers travelling per annum.
In summary, London stands top in the list for the longest route of the underground railway system. While, the shortest being the Kyoto. Major flow of passengers was in Tokyo and less flow was seen in Kyoto.
