The table below presents the number of children ever born to women aged 40-44 years in Australia for each year the information was collected since 1981.
The table shows the percentage of children born to women aged 40–44 years in Australia from 1981 to 2006. Overall, it is clear that the proportion of women who had three or more children decreased, while the number of those who had three children and no child increased among ages 40-44 years.
In 1981, close to 27% of women aged 40-44 years who had given a birth to 3 or more children. However, the number of women who had given birth to 4 or more children dropped significantly to 11% in 2006, while the figure for those who have had only three children remained stable by 1986 before a slight drop to 21% in 2006.
Regarding from the table, throughout the period of 15 years, the number of women in their early forties who had 2 children was highest, at 29%. This figure had then risen steadily to 38% by the end of this period. Similarly, the percentage of women who were childless and had 1 children grown gradually from 8% and 7% to 16% and 13% respectively.
