The table gives information about the percentage of students studying at four types of secondary schools from 2000 to 2009.
It is clear that the number of pupils in the specialist, grammar, and voluntary-controlled schools was gone down, whereas the community schools became the most important for secondary students during the same period.
To begin, the voluntary-controlled schools fell from just over half to 20 percent between 2000 and 2009. Similarly, the number of children in grammar schools – just under one quarter – dropped by half in the same period. The relatively small percentage of pupils attending the specialist schools (12 percent) also fell, but it was not significant.
However, while the other three types of school declined in importance, the opposite was true in the case of community schools. In fact, in the year 2000, only a small minority of 12 percent were educated in these schools, but the figure increased to over half of all students during the following nine years.
