The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade - labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.
The tables present the Fairtrade coffee and bananas revenues in two separate years 1999 and 2004 in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
It is clear that the coffee sales in all nations went up over the period while the bananas revenues rose in three out of the five countries. Overall, the UK had the highest levels in spending on both products.
In 1999, Switzerland’s Fairtrade coffee sales were the highest at 3 million of euros while the UK had the highest bananas revenue, at 15 million of euros. By 2004, the coffee turnover in the UK rose to more than three times that in Switzerland, 20 million of euros compared to 6. The year 2004 also saw the dramatic increase in bananas revenue in the UK by 32 million of euros.
The sales of both products in Denmark, Belgium and Sweden were far fewer than in other countries. Though the coffee sales in these countries grew from 1999 to 2004, the sales figure were not higher than 2 million of euros. Finally, the money spending on bananas in Denmark increased actually fell in Belgium and Sweden.
