Task 1 IELTS Writing Model - Cambridge 8 Test 4 Goods transported in UK (1974 – 2002)
The graph illustrates the data of product amounts transported in the UK by four varieties of transportation systems from 1974 to 2002.
In general, road was responsible for the transportation of most goods. There was an upward trend in the quantities of goods transported by road, water and pipeline; while product transportation by rail remained a steady rate during the period.
In 1974, the amounts of goods moved by road mainly with about 70 million tonnes, while goods transportation by water and rail contributed equally with 40 million tonnes. In the contrast, pipeline played a small part in the delivery of only about 5 million tonnes.
From that year to 2002, the importance of product transportation by road went up with its figure reaching a peak at approximately 95 million tonnes. In the same way, the pipeline increased gradually over the years before peaking at 22 million tones. Although having stability in the first four years, the figures for water and rail then showed fluctuation during the period. While the former of goods transportation by water climbed to over 60 million tonnes, the latter decreased slightly before recovering to the increase trend. The amount of goods transported by rail remained constant at 40 million tonnes in spite of decrease in between the years.
