The graph below shows the changes in maximum number of Asian elephants between 1997 and 2004. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The graph illustrates the estimated highest population of elephants in nine different Asian countries in both 1997 and 2004. Overall, the number of elephants in Asian countries witnessed a remarkable fall between 1997 and 2004, apart from the elephant population in Cambodia and Laos. Additionally, the largest population of elephants was in India.
In 1997, India was occupied by the largest number of elephants, at 10000, nearly double the elephant population in Myanmar, at 5400. Thailand reported the second highest population of elephants, at 3900. Similarly, Sri Lanka and Malaysia were home to the same number of elephants, at 3000. By contrast, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and China registered roughly 1000 elephants.
In 2004, Thailand and Malaysia experienced a plunge in elephant population, shrinking to 1300 and 1000. There was a significant fall to 7500 and 500 in elephant population in India and China, whereas the number of elephants in Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Myanmar dropped minimally to 1100, 2800 and 4800, respectively. By contrast, Cambodia saw a marginal growth in elephant population to 1500, while the population of elephants in Laos remained stable.
