You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private accommodation with other flat mates. You have not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter,
• state your reason for writing
• describe the problems and explain how you feel
• propose a solution and risk the landlord to take action
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to you to inform that we have been facing troubles for last 7 days as the central water heater is not functioning properly. Though the electrician, assigned by you, paid a visit, the problem is not solved yet. As a result, the supply of hot water is currently not available to the tenants of your house.
The average temperature of our location is 4 degree celcious, so this is almost impossible to use water at such cool temperature. Since the water heating system is not working, we are incapable of using water from central tank, rather we are using small heathers to warm-up the water. In this process, many of our daily chores are being hampered because we are only heating the water when it is absolutely necessary. If this current situation persist, we will have no option but to look for another house.
The electrician who visited the site provided opinion that the heating system requires complete replacement. Moreover, he can execute the operation if you agree to buy the new machineries. In my opinion, as the current heather is unrepairable, please take immediate action to replace the old equipments with new ones.
I look forward to receiving positive resonse from you soon.
Kind regards,
Tasnim Fahmi
