Some people believe that governments should invest in the arts, others argue that environmental issues should be the main focus of such investment. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Include relevant examples to support your ideas.
There is an ongoing debate on the chief purpose of government investment. While some individuals contend that governments should invest in the arts, others argue that environmental protection should be the fundamental focus. Due to the considerable merits of these viewpoints, I argue that both environmental issues and the arts should receive equitable attention from the government for the following reasons.
On the one hand, a compelling reason to prioritize government funds in the arts is the preservation of enduring cultural values. Specifically, paintings and artworks have been instrumental in depicting various historical events, offering insights into how our ancestors evolved and contributed to the sustainable development of the contemporary world. These insights have encouraged residents worldwide to continuously contribute to the development of their respective nations. For instance, numerous art masterpieces of the American war during 1954-1975 demonstrated the casualties across Vietnam, reinforcing solidarity and patriotism among young Vietnamese generations. Consequently, the Vietnamese government has directed its national resources to the establishment of a recently-created military museum for the commemoration of its glorious past.
On the other hand, the distribution of financial resources from the government should be diverted toward environmental protection to ensure human safety. The release of carbon dioxide emissions and other pollutants from agricultural and industrial activities has exacerbated global warming, leading to unpredictable changes in weather patterns. Consequently, many storms have increased in intensity and frequency, adversely affecting people’s lives in many parts of the world. For instance, the super typhoon Yagi hitting northern Vietnam in September 2024 has exerted detrimental effects on numerous individuals, including wrecking houses and agricultural crops in these areas. As a result, these devastating consequences have led to a shortage of fresh vegetables and shelter, resulting in skyrocketing prices. Therefore, it is essential for governments to invest in environmental protection to minimize the risks of severe environmental catastrophes, which is crucial for safeguarding human lives.
In conclusion, although there are some continuous arguments about the purpose of government investment, I contend that such monetary schemes should be allocated equally to both the arts and environmental issues. While environmental protection can mitigate the detrimental effects of natural disasters, various masterpieces of the arts can contribute to the cultural diversity of the nation. Achieving a financial balance in these aspects may lead to a nation’s sustainability and prosperity.
