Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Education is an important part of our lives. A successful education system can be the main role of developing countries. Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures, while others disagree. In my view, it is much better to have open discussions for the following reasons.
First, this kind of education is definitely more effective. While students can read any lecture by themselves at home, these discussions will enhance their understanding. The students will have an active learning tool and will be able to benefit from the personal experience of the professor. This is not possible with traditional education. For example, last year I was in the fifth grade of med school. We had a professor that was asking us to read about specific topics at home in order to discuss them in class. The next day we would have a discussion while examining a patient with the same disease we read about. Unlike other classes, which were so boring, all the students were participating in the discussion. It was like completing the missing parts that we were not able to get without the discussion. We couldn’t forget what he taught us even after months. Consequently, open discussions are much better.
Second, having open discussions is more fun and motivating for students. In addition to effective learning, students have the opportunity to express themselves. This helps them to improve their social skills and build a healthy and strong personality. Although some students might be more dominant in the discussions, a successful professor can make all of the students active. Take my friend as an example. He was a very lazy student who used to sleep during lessons. As participating in classes is mandatory in our university, he was coming to classes to sleeping only. When we had that professor with the active discussions, my friend has become another person. Although he is a very shy person, he started to participate and to be more confident. These discussions have influenced the way he feels about himself. That’s why I feel open discussions are much better.
