Some thinks that scores should be the sum of the scores of many assignments, while others think that scores should be the results of 1 or 2 exams. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Some people think that the students’ grade should depend solely on one or two exams, while others think that they should depend on students’ overall performance. For me, I think that students’ grade should be evaluated from the total scores of different assignments based on the following three reasons.
First, educators should place an emphasis on fairness among students. Therefore, if the professor determines students’ performance on one exam only, it is extremely unfair to unlucky people. In other words, when professors are evaluating students’ performances, they need to rule out any factors that involve luck. For instance, when I was studying in college, my friend Fred studied extremely hard on his final exam. Unfortunately, he got a high fever before the test. Although he did tell the professor about his situation, the professor told him that he could take the exam one week later, but 20% of the score needed to be taken away. Clearly, the professor’s policy is extremely unfair to him, because he was simply unlucky.
Secondly, educators should motivate students to study, but determining students’ final score based on only a few tests might produces counter effects. For example, if the professor tells the students that their grade will be evaluated by the final exam only, then students will only study before the test happens. In other words, students will not study regularly during the semester. Nevertheless, if the professor tells them that their score will be evaluated by all assignments, then they will put more efforts on doing schoolwork. That is, they will definitely spend more time studying on a weekly basis because they have the incentive to do well on their homework. In result, the professor can motivate their students more.
Finally, professors should make students develop a righteous personality. Yet, if their grade is judged only by a few exams, students might try to cheat to gain what they want. In the long run, their personality might become deceptive. Take my friend Todd as an example. When Todd was studying physics in college, lots of his professors gave scores by judging on students’ performance on final exams solely. However, competition among the physics department is extremely high, so students tend to cheat on their final exams to get good score. Todd was not an exception, he cheated by hiding some cheat sheets in his pencil case. However, he always told me that he regretted doing so because during that time, his character is extremely distorted. In addition, he also stated that if the professor decided their score based on overall performances, such as all assignment scores, then less people will cheat.
In conclusion, I think that students’ grade should depend on all students’ assignment scores, because educators should care about students’ fairness, motivation, as well as righteousness.
