The reading material is talking about why it is impossible for a permanent station to be maintained on Venus. Yet the professor in the listening material believes that if the station remains at a height about 50 km from the surface of Venus, all these problems can be solved.
First off, the author shows the fact that pressure if the Venus is so big that all of the spacecraft as well as any other things send by human will crush. However, the professor opposes that. She includes the basic physical fact that pressure will be lower if height is greater. The professor argues that pressure at the location of 50 km high from surface on Venus will be roughly equal to the normal pressure on Earth according to this law. In this way, danger of crush will disappear.
Secondly, the writer holds the opinion that no water vapor or oxygen exist in Venus’ atmosphere, so these things must be supplied from Earth, which defeats the purpose of maintaining a permanent station. Nevertheless, the professor points out that using the carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid on Venus, water and oxygen can be made through some chemical process. Hence, we can apply chemical materials that are quite easy to get from Venus’ atmosphere to produce water and oxygen rather than getting them from Earth.
Finally, the article says that Venus’ thick cloud blocks most of the sunlight, without enough sunlight, we cannot get electricity from solar cell to power our equipment. Nonetheless, the professor’s opinion is that at the height of 50 km, cloud will be less thick and a large amount of sunlight can pass though it. Moreover, the cloud below the station can also reflect some light. By using both the sunlight from above and the reflected light from below, we can generate enough electricity to power the station.
To summarize, holding the station at the height of 50 km above the surface of Venus, conditions will be quite suitable for us to colonize on Venus permanently.
