The article states that Steller's sea cow, a huge marine mammal lived in the waters around Bering island off the coast of Siberia, became extinct in 1768. Three reasons are mentioned in the passage as the main reasons of sea cows’ extinction. However, the professor explains that we do not know the main reason of extinction, and there are problems with the passage's reasons. He also refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that hundreds of years of over hunting by the native people, may be the main cause of sea cows’ extinction. The professor refutes this point by saying that sea cows were too large. They were 9 meters long, so couple of them would have been enough for villages of natives for months. He also states that the natives did not hunt a lot of sea cows, therefore their hunting was not the main cause of sea cows’ extinction.
Second, the article posits that ecosystems disturbances caused sea cows extinction. These disturbances declined the main source of sea cow’s food, kelp. However, the professor says that if something really had happened to ecosystems, it would have affected other animals too, like whales. According to the professor there are no records of the whales’ population decline in that period, because of ecosystems disturbances. Therefor no disturbances happened then, and sea cows did not experience food shortage.
Third, the passage says that the extinction of sea cows might be caused by European far traders. The last sea cow was captured by these far traders, and they have weapons that could kill a large number of sea cows. The professor opposes this point by explaining that the sea cows’ population was already quit small when European far traders arrive. We also learn that population of sea cows was at its largest hundreds of years before sea traders’ arrival, so the main cause of decline in the sea cow's population was something else. Whatever caused this declination, should be considered the main reason for sea cow's extinction.
