4-Day Workweek

Essay topics:

4-Day Workweek

The main topic of both the passage and the lecture is about changing workdays from 5 days, 8 hours a day to 4 days, 10 hours a day. The reading states that although 5-day workweek is popular in the US, some companies have reduced their work days to 4 with an increase in working hours from 8 to 10 and explains three reasons on how it can be beneficial. However, the lecturer opposes these benefits and he thinks that they are not enough for such a dramatic change.

First, the author believes that a day off will lower the commute expenses of employees. However, the lecturer does not totally agree with this opinion. He explains that usually people spend about 15-20 dollars on gas per day for their trip to work, therefore about 850 dollars a year will be saved which he believes it does not justify the reduction in work day.

Second, the reading claims that reducing work days will lower the operating costs of businesses. On the other hand, the lecturer contends that the article is misguided since it would cost the company loses its profit by about 20%. He explains that the 2 hours raise on working time will not help companies to compensate the day off since the additional 2 hours will be at evening when most potential consumers have gone home so they will not do any business.

Third, the reading avers that employees will be able to spend more time with their families as a result of a day off. In contrast, the lecture opposes this point by saying that not only a day off will not provide employees with extra hours to spend with their families but also it may cause them some problems. For example, employees with young children should look for a daycare center opens until evening, which is hard to find. Also, employees with older children will not have extra time either, since their children should go to school on the fifth day.
