air purification
The reading and the lecture are about the methods of air purification. The author of the reading feels that HEPA filters, Ozone purifiers, and UV air purifiers has a greater effect on the purification of air. The lecturer challenges all the claims made by the author and explains hereunder.
First of all, the professor implies that HEPA filters though they can eliminate many toxic particles, they cannot get rid of smaller ones. For instance, allergens which are smaller than 0.3 micrometres are very small to escape through HEPA filters. Furthermore, they grow in these filters and cause more serious implications when they are released. On the other hand, the writer states that HEPA filters traps all the toxic substances and produce cleaner eco-friendly air.
Secondly, the passage indicates that installing ozone purifiers will remove the unpleasant smells and also harmful chemicals that are airborne. However, the tutor argues with this particular statement and says that ozone is dangerous even though it removes bad smells, because the higher concentration of ozone will be harmful for our skin, eyes, and to different parts of our body. Moreover, we can relate this ozone purifier to normal ozone layer in the atmosphere which is dangerous when we are exposed.
Finally, the academician states that UV filters are not effective in cleaning away all the bacteria and also does not give much clean air to breathe. In addition to that they cannot filter the ciggarette smoke and other chemical fumes which are very harmful for the humans, which we want to get rid off. On the contrary, the reading posits that UV filters removes harmful bacteria even with microscopic harmful particles in the air and gives a cleaner environment to breathe and live.
