Air purifiers are being used to protect our health from air pollution. Many different types of air purifiers have been invented for better effects. Here are some of the most widely used air purifiers.
HEPA filters are effective at removing allergens such as dust or pollens without producing secondary pollution. The folded fiber sheets of the HEPA filters trap toxic substances when the absorbed particles come into contact with the fiber. Once any large enough particle is absorbed, the filter will produce cleaner air in an eco-friendly way.
Ozone-generating air purifiers remove unpleasant smells and airborne chemicals. This can be done with the help of ozone, which creates a special reaction when it comes in contact with hazardous substances. Also, ozone has a pleasant smell like air fresheners. These two features of ozone-generating filters appeal to many customers.
UV air purifiers directly react with the air and remove harmful bacteria in it. It is especially useful when removing harmful microscopic particles in the atmosphere. This results in a better environment to live in with cleaner air to breathe. Moreover, UV air filters operate so quietly that it is hard to hear them working.
Air filters are beneficial to people, as those provide cleaner, healthier and safer air to breathe in. The reading passage talks about the functionalities and benefits of various air filters. But, the lecturer redeems them not as effective as they seem to be according to the reading passage. To defend his opinion, he presents shortcomings associated with every type of air purifiers mentioned in the passage.
To start, he discusses HEPA filters' inability to remove particles smaller than 0.3 micron from the air. Particles that cannot be removed by HEPA filters include many noxious organisms that grows in the folded fiber sheets and are allowed to recirculate in the air, making the air not too safe to breathe in.
He goes on saying that the Ozone-generating air purifiers can prove very dangerous too. This purifier removes hazardous substances by having ozone parrticles react with them, and leaves a good air-freshener like smell in the recirculated air. But the concentration of ozone gas used should be in check, as high concentration of ozone gas can react severely with human skin, eyes, lungs etc. So high concentration of ozone can turn out to be as hazardous as gasoline and other harmful gaseous substances.
Lastly, he states that although the UV air purifier removes harmful bacteria in air and operates quietly, it cannot remove most allergens, dust, cigarette smoke, gaseous fumes and other undesired gaseous substances from the air. Therefore, it does not provide as clean air as it is thought to do.
The lecturer thus presents various shortcomings and hazards of the air purifiers listed. From the lecture, it is clear that he disagrees with the level of effectiveness of the air purifiers described in the passages.
